AGM 2019
Monday 4th February 7pm Burley Village Hall
Chairman’s Report for period Jan – Dec 2018.
This is our 4th AGM since Burley Village Cinema was launched in February 2015. We continue to show 10 films per year which are normally screened on the 1st Monday of each month. The only exceptions to monthly shows are January, when the hall is in use for the annual village panto, and during the main holiday season in August. In his report, our Treasurer, David Etchells, will give details of attendances and ticket sales over the past year and outline our current financial position.
At the last AGM I was able to announce that we planned to stop the two tier pricing system of advance tickets and tickets on the door. All tickets were reduced to £5 and only available on the night. This will continue during 2019 as long as our cash reserves allow and our break-even attendance numbers are reached. During the year the committee initiated a publicity drive by dropping leaflets through doors throughout the village. This appears to have had some success but undoubtedly the best publicity is personal recommendation. So please think inviting your friends and neighbours along each month and help us maintain low ticket prices.
The interval refreshments continue to be popular and Committee member Jeremy Hodgkins has organised a rota of helpers to provide them for us. More help would be appreciated so if you feel able to join the Tea & Coffee rota, please speak to Jeremy. The more volunteers the less often each person will be called upon to help.
The small profit raised through the sale of Ice Creams & refreshments once again allowed us to provide free Mulled Wine and Mince Pies at the December showing of “The Greatest Showman”. I don’t know whether it was the popularity of the film or the aroma of the Mulled Wine but December was our best attended film with 71 tickets sold.
I would commend to you our dedicated website, which sets out what Burley Village Cinema is all about, and includes trailers of forthcoming films and links to film reviews. By logging on you will also be able to vote for all future films. The selection of films is purely down to the number of votes cast. So if you want to have a say on what we show during 2019, log on and make your choice each quarter.
Looking forward, we have been approached by New Forest District Council who are organising a New Forest Film Festival 8th – 16th June . It will be a celebration of:
· films with a New Forest connection
· our amazing local creative talent,
· the variety of venues screening films
· the diverse filming locations the New Forest offers.
During the festival week we will be organising an extra film night on Tuesday 11th June. Details will be on the website when confirmed.
To end this report I would like to thank the Committee for all their support over the last year. Thanks also to those who assist in setting up and clearing the venue each month and to those providing refreshments for our enjoyment.
Finally I would like to thank you, our members, those of you who buy the tickets each month. Burley Village Cinema is your local cinema in this community. If you like what we are doing then spread the good news, tell people about the website, invite them along.
And if you have any ideas of things we might do to further improve the overall film experience, please speak to me or any of the committee. Following one suggestion last year, we are looking into the possibility of purchasing a quantity of new seat pads to replace the old foam cushions supplied by the village hall.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at some or all of our future screenings in 2019.
Thank you.
Clive Gammon ( Chair)
