Burley Village Cinema
AGM 2016
Monday 1st February 7pm Burley Village Hall
Chairman’s Report – Clive Gammon
This being our first AGM, and for those of you unfamiliar with the history behind the setting up of Burley Village Cinema, let me briefly explain how we came into existence.
Some years ago Burley Church decided that it wanted to create an opportunity for people in Burley to see commercial box office films in this locality as a service to the community. In partnership with a company called ‘Moviola’ they set up monthly film shows in this village hall. For a percentage of the ticket sales, Moviola provided the films, the projectionist and all the equipment. This partnership ran well for a number of years with attendances, and therefore income, rising and falling throughout the year but generally breaking even in cash terms. However, in April 2014 Moviola changed their charging policy which increased the overall cost of screenings and all subsequent films that year ran at a loss. At the same time questions were asked as to whether the content of some films were appropriate to be screened under the banner of the Church. The Church made it clear that it would not wish to impose any form of censorship over the film selections and therefore approached other local groups and societies to find out if anyone else wished to take over the running of Moviola film nights.
Faced with the possibility of losing this community facility a number of local people got together and offered to establish an independent cinema group in the village – a move supported by the Church PCC. Each individual donated an amount of money to provide a ‘sink fund’ in the event that ticket sales did not cover expenditure. The group also changed film supplier from Moviola to Filmflixs, a small company providing the same service level as Moviola but at less cost and run by one of their former projectionists – Mark Davies.
Burley Village Cinema as an Unincorporated Association was launched at an open meeting on 9th February 2015 attended by 75 local people. A constitution was agreed and a management committee appointed. This was followed by our first film screening.
Over the past year we have enjoyed 10 films including, for the first time, a screening in the July holiday period. Average attendances have exceeded our required breakeven figure of 46. The small profit generated from each film, together with income raised by sales of interval drinks and Ice Creams, means that we have not yet needed to draw upon the pool of donations generously provided by our original benefactors. The current financial position will be outlined in the Treasurer’s report later.
To end this report I would like to thank all those who have helped to create this group, to our original donors, to the Committee for their work each month in arranging the films with particular thanks to Dave Ratford who undertakes the majority of the administration, to those who assist in setting up and clearing the venue each month, to those providing refreshments for our enjoyment.
Finally I would like to thank our members, those of you who buy the tickets each month and make the effort to come out, sit on chairs that might not be as comfortable as we might wish, and sit through a variety of films, some of which might not necessarily be to your taste. But I know that you do it because you want to support this community venture – so thank you.
Burley Village Cinema is your local cinema group in this village so if you want to get more involved or you have some ideas of things we might do differently to improve the overall film experience, please let us know.
We look forward to seeing you at some or all of our future screenings this year.
Thank you.
